In mid April members of the North Cumbria Conservative Patrons Club added Strasbourg to their list of parliamentary tours; in previous years we have visited Westminster, Holyrood, Stormont and Brussels.
The beautiful city of Strasbourg had much to offer with a scenic boat tour of the historic and modern buildings, sign pointing Art Galleries, Museums, Cathedral and Chocolate Factory. The cobbled streets and squares can easily be explored on board a small tram wjhich trindles around the historic area of the city, complimented by a very informative audio commentary.
Dining in the Gurtlerhoft restaurant was an unforgetable experience, serving Alsatian specialities in the spectacular setting of a vaulted cellar.
By contrast the European Parlament building is a large, modern clean design and the Patrons were able to listen to a debate on immigratuion in the chamber, with views being expressed by many member states.
Sajjad Karim MEP welcomed us to Strasbourg and gave a very informative briefing, following which he took questions from our mmbers on very diverse subjects. Our sincere thanks to Sajjad for his sponsorship of our visit and excellent work he undertakes on our behalf.
Given the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels security had been tightened, resulting in a delay accessing the Parliament building; an understandable and very necessary precaution.
The never failing comaraderie and friendliness of the group made the visit to Strasbourg as very memorable one and a pleasure to have been part of the visit.
Being a Conservative can be very enjoyable and a lot of fun, as well as raising funds to support our candidates and office facilities; so if you think you may be interested in joining us as a Patron or would like more information please just get in touch with me.
